What is DBT ?

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy is a talking therapy which helps you manage overwhelming emotions. These emotions can create problem behaviours which can significantly interfere with your relationships.
DBT’s main goals are to teach people how to live in the moment, develop healthy ways to cope with stress, regulate their emotions, and improve their relationships with others. Techniques can have an instant impact in any situation.
It can help people who have difficulty with emotional regulation or are exhibiting self-destructive behaviours such as eating disorders, substance use disorders, and self-harm.
Overwhelming emotional responses can cause you to feel anxious, show signs of rage and contribute to you feeling low in mood.

Dialectical behaviour therapy is divided into four stages of treatment:

Phase 1: Assessment phase

The most serious and self-destructive behaviours are the first elements which are addressed. This may include issues such as self-injury or suicidal behaviours. A risk assessment takes place and a safety plan is created.

Phase 2:

In this phase treatment moves on to address issues that affect a person’s quality of life, such as their interpersonal effectiveness, emotional regulation skills, and ability to tolerate distress. We break these areas down and teach techniques to manage in each area.

Phase 3:

The next step is to focus on issues related to self-esteem and interpersonal relationships. We also look at people’s values and work with these to facilitate change

Phase 4:

At this point, treatment is focused on helping people get the most out of their lives, including finding ways to experience greater happiness, strengthen their relationships, and pursue their life goals.

“I was having intense incidents of rage usually towards my parents. I couldn’t help it and it felt that my emotions were out of control. This was impacting upon all my relationships in every area of my life. I felt guilt and shame but just couldn’t control it. I thought people were going to leave me and I feared abandonment. I just wanted everything to be ok. I started DBT treatment at level best and they taught me techniques to manage this. It changed my life”.
